Cycling News March 23, 2020

Not much has changed regarding the past and future seven days, as every race, event, and social gathering has been cancelled for at least the next couple of weeks because of the COVD-19 pandemic. However, a number of organizers have announced tentative plans for their races in 2020 or 2021.

The COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic has changed the world as we know it. The threat is far greater and more important than race cancellations, as thousands of people around the world have tested positive for the virus. Among those directly affected are Fernando Gaviria and Max Richeze of UAE Team Emirates who remain quarantined in an Abu Dhabi hospital. Both riders were part of the UAE Tour which was cancelled for the suspected presence of coronavirus some three weeks ago.time ever.

Cycling media house announced today that they had reached agreements with two major US professional races to provide free live coverage. Following a successful pilot streaming the Redlands Bicycle Classic in 2019, Los
Angeles based CycleStream TV will return to Redlands in 2020, and add free live streaming coverage to the Tour of the Gila in Silver City, New Mexico. Cyclestream will continue to push the envelope of technology, offering both streams in full 4k for the first
time ever.

The Strade Bianche was cancelled after a meeting between Italian authorities and race organizer RCS Sport. The previous evening, the Italian government had issued a statement banning sporting events which could not be held behind closed doors. Cycling on the beautiful, unpaved roads of Strade Bianche is, obviously, not in this category. Covid-19 coronavirus has continued to spread throughout Europe and the rest of the world, and the risk to public health is too great at this time to hold public events In Italy.

Jasper Stuyven (Trek-Segafredo) beat Yves Lampaert (Deceuninck-QuickStep) in a two-up sprint to win Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, becoming the tenth rider in history to win both Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne. Søren Kragh Andersen (Sunweb) held on for third after being dropped in the final couple of kilometers, and Matteo Trentin (CCC Team) finished fourth after a long, solo chase just a handful of seconds behind the leaders.
